Riding on the Earth

Standing outside, in the waning night, I looked to the Moon, one day past full. Through the hazy sky She appeared peaceful, directing my attention toward a bright star (or planet) directly overhead. This is when I noticed the abundance of stars still present, as the daylight stood in the wings about to make its entrance, and the sheer of haze distracted the view, ever so slightly.

Once again I felt it. Looking out into the vastness of the Universe, I once again felt it, that sense of standing on this subtly spinning Earth and its gravity holding me on, while all of the Universe is pulling at my very presence here. It’s that sense of riding on the Earth, rather what is the common everyday perspective of stability. It’s that sense unlike standing on the back of a flatbed pickup, riding down the road, and having to keep my balance in the meanwhile. More, it’s like that feeling of standing on a mountaintop, with all of the rest of the world cast across below, and the sense that if I don’t pay attention I could fall down.

Wow! What a ride!

Thanks, Joe. I appreciate your input and am glad, also, to have had time with both you and Shane at the same time. Nice team of father and son and you’re both brilliant.

I don’t have a computer and so have to be content with an hour at a time at the library. in delving into your writing and thoughts (and coming across kevin mckearn in the process), I wish I had a little more time today to formulate a broader reaction to your site than time allows. but I love it, the set up, the accessibility, even your choice of colors and the photos. so glad you and your nephew shane were able to get together; he really admires you and takes what you say to heart. warmest regards, joe
